We had a full day today! Lots of waterfalls, rainbows + a beach! From Instagram and travel blogs, I had a few waterfall locations I knew I wanted to go to. There's also a little town named Vik that has a black sand beach, Reynisfjara, nearby that I wanted to visit. Since the waterfalls are pretty much on the way to the beach, we decided to make a day of it. The drive was about 2 hours from our airbnb right outside of Reykjavik.
First up was Seljalandsfoss ($5 to anyone who can pronounce that the first time!). This waterfall is one that you can actually hike up behind, and look out from behind it... but the path was rocky and slippery from the mist since it is so close to the base of the falls and I definitely fell (and landed smack on my knees, which produced some scrapes and a nice knot) so we didn't quite finish the journey all the way down the rocks.
Not too far away was Skogafoss. There were rainbows all over! I saw something somewhere on the interwebs that jokingly said Iceland has more rainbows than people and I'm starting to believe it, ha. There was a huge, tall staircase that led to the an overhang on the top but since I had just fallen and also Chris and I aren't too fond of heights, we decided to stick to the ground. The scenery all around this waterfall was gorgeous.
Then we made our way, probably a 30 minute drive, to Reynisfjara. The black sand beach is actually really mostly rocks. There are huge basalt columns that people were climbing on to take pictures and there were some caves where people were doing photoshoots and we even saw a bride and groom taking pictures by the waves! The bright blue skies, rolling green hills and black "sand" was picture-perfect.
Then, on our way back, we passed by a church and graveyard which I had Chris stop by so I could take some pictures. There seems to be a lot of scattered buildings like this one throughout the huge fields as you're driving, so it was about time to stop and admire one!
